An Introduction To Hatha Yoga

It was a nice Sunday afternoon and I was out shopping at one of my favourite stores. Looking at certain items on sale, my eyes stopped at a Yoga mat and a Yoga CD. Its cost was less than what I would spend at Starbucks in one go...so I thought even if I dont use it, I wont regret it. And that was how I began with Yoga- absolutely disenchanted !!

Next morning after my husband left for work and my daughter said bye to me for her school, I was all set to experiment with my yesterday purchase –The Mat and CD. The CD opened with a man sitting on the mat and describing Yoga before getting started. As I said I wasnt as much interested, but I wanted some value for my money spent, so I paid a part of my attention to him. He began. Yoga is a journey to achieve complete perfection in the functioning of body, breath, mind, and spirit. . Yoga includes all of the following: Asana, Pranayama, Bandha, Mudra, Visualization, Meditation, Chanting, Kriya, Mantra, Kundalini, along with a vast array of other practices.

Hatha Yoga is a particular system of Yoga which targets to achieve a preparatory stage of physical purification that renders the body fit for the practice of higher meditation. The word Hatha is a compound of the words Ha and Tha meaning sun and moon referring to Praana and Apraana. This is based on the principal of nadis (energy channels of ones body) that must be fully functional to attain a state of samadhi.



By this time I was done with theory and it was time for some action. The Yoga teacher in the CD began with sun salutations (Surya Namaskar). I started with him and realized that each and every bit of my body right from my head to my toes was stretched and fully in action. He then taught a few other postures for back like cobra pose and for legs like lotus position.

I will not lie here, I enjoyed doing those aasanas. I started doing Yoga for 30 minutes as the first thing every morning. I could see that it helped to ease me into the day. Depending on what I'm doing throughout the day and how I'm feeling, I used do some stretches and breathing to reduce stress. I was able to do more work, retain my posture and reduce injuries or pain from sitting and repetetive motions.

Yoga was not just some practice on a mat for me but a way to live life. And since then I am living Yoga. I have gone through many difficult times in my life thereafter but Yoga helped me survive the worst. So, if you happen to be someone who gets depressed by the decreasing sunlight as we delve into Winters, wake up to sublime happiness with Yoga, as I did!!
