About the authors
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were German scholars who were well known for publishing collections of folk tales and fairy tales. They are among the best known story tellers from Europe.
Synopsis of the story
The story is about two young children Hansel and Gretel. Their father was poor woodcutter. The children’s step mother decides to get rid of the children and forces the woodcutter to take the children to the forest and abandon them there. The children who over hear the plot; decide to leave behind a trail, so that they could find their way back from the forest. Alas, they leave behind a trail of bread crumbs that is eaten by the animals and birds in the forest. Hansel and Gretel find themselves all alone in the forest.As they wonder aimlessly the children come across a beautiful house in the forest. It is made of chocolates and cake, ginger bread and cream. The children begin to feast on it. Soon they discover that the house belongs to a terrible witch who takes them captive.The witch locks up Hansel in a cage and makes Gretel do all the house hold chores. The children are helpless. Gretel weeps bitterly and does all that she is told. The witch keeps feeding Hansel in the hope of fatten him up before eating him.One fine day the witch decides to eat Hansel. She heats up the oven to bake Hansel, but Gretel manages to push the witch into the oven instead. They take the jewels from the witch’s house and are re- united with their father. With their step mother dead the children live happily ever after with their father.
Theme of the story
The story reflects the bond between a Brother and a Sister, of how they survived a very hard situation. The story also highlights the fact that with a little presence of mind any adverse situation could be overcome to ones advantage.
