The Uniform Project – it’s different

‘The only things we ever have are the ones we give away.’ These were the words that came to my mind when I came across the Uniform Project.

Uniform Project - sounds different, doesn’t it? Different it is, right from the idea to the goal, and what a goal!!! Let me first talk about the goal before I tell you about the novel idea conceived, to reach the goal.

Started in May 2009, the Uniform Project is a yearlong fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation. The foundation is a grassroots movement that is transforming the face of education in India. All the contributions received will go towards Akanksha’s School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for children living in Indian slums.

Now, to come back to the idea!!

Sheena Matheiken and Eliza Starbuck started the Uniform Project to raise money for Akanksha. Sheena, who’s the face of the Uniform Project, is wearing one dress designed by Eliza -- the dress is designed so it can be worn both ways, front and back, and also as an open tunic and is made from durable, breathable cotton -- for 365 days. It’s styled in an innovative way with different accessories each day, but it’s just one dress.

Here’s what Sheena has to say about her Uniform Project … “Here’s how it works: There are 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day I will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accouterments, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies. Think of it as wearing a daily uniform with enough creative licenses to make it look like I just crawled out of the Marquis de Sade's boudoir.”

Every day there’s a new post, so you can tune in to see how Sheena’s wearing her simple black outfit seven days a week. They also tell you where to get the accessories and other pieces she has on, so it doubles as a shopping site.

Apart from inspiring style, Uniform Project inspires philanthropy. Akanksha is opening schools this fall in Mumbai and Pune, and Sheena and Eliza’s venture has already raised a sizable amount for the foundation.

Well, inspired to start wearing a uniform? Browse the site and donate if you can, as the Chinese say when a man comes asking for a fish teach him fishing for you will be giving him a livelihood.

You could donate your old accessories too if you want to!!!!

Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your content seem to be running off the screen in Chrome.
I'm not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I figured I'd post to let you know.

The style and design look great though! Hope you get the problem fixed soon. Cheers
