  Saroj Khan

Talking of women one cannot just miss Saroj Khan's name. She rose to fame with Shekhar Kapur's Mr India. Vaibhavi Merchant is another choreographer who has brought India to international audiences.

These are some women who have gained audiences, and people know about them. But women like Sharmistha Roy, Amala Papuri, Savita Singh and Fawzia Fatima are relatively lesser known. Films like Bheja Fry, Mixed doubles have had women in the production design and lighting department. The Hindi film industry is beginning to see a number of female executive producers, first assistant directors, cinematographers and even sound engineers who have been learning the ropes of film making and film trade, so much so that now Big banners want to work with them. We salute all their efforts

When Mira Nair, first started her career in films with showcasing her work at every small festival in US, nobody knew she would be making a mark and paving way for many women directors back home in India. So did Deepa Mehta, who is quite a rage for her treatment of Indian subjects.

Bollywood is generally a male domain. Women have primarily fitted into bringing the glamor quotient in front of the camera. Carving a niche, slowly and steadily, women are now an integral part of even backstage to runt the show independently. Areas like editing, photography, music, directing and choreography were male preserves. These are the women coming to prominence behind the scenes, striding towards greater equality.
